Hozuki Matsuri

On the 3rd weekend of July each year, a festival is held in celebration of the mysteriously beautiful “Hozuki” red Chinese lantern plant in the small suburb town of Ushita in Hiroshima city, Japan. Located a short bus ride (#6) from the city center, this festival is held along the pedestrianized main street in front of Ushita elementary school.  Although many of the city’s main festivals are held around this time of year this smaller festival has a fun, relaxed and friendly vibe.

Many of the festival goers wear Yukata summer kimono in the same fashion as the larger Tokasan or  Ebisu-ko festivals, but you will find it much easier to get through this suburban crowd and the lines are not half as long for games, drinks and food. There are also performances held at the different ends of the street. At the last festival, one stage had hip-hop dancing and Taiko drumming performances as well as a children’s Yukata contest. The other end didn’t have a raised stage, but live bands were playing in a roped off area. One classic 50′s rock n’ roll had the crowd jumping and dancing along with them- it was great fun.

Fireworks in Hiroshima in JULY

Hello everyone!
It's in rainy season in Japan right now but when it's over the hot summer arrives. Japanese people love going out in the evening to see fireworks in summer time.

Check out the following information for all the firework festivals in Hiroshima in July 2012!

●●● Miyoshi City Fireworks Festival ●●●
July 21, 2012   20:00 - 21:30

10,000 fireworks over 2 hours in this city in the north of the prefecture. Wondering if it’s worth dealing with the other 40,000 plus people along the riverside to get a good view, try up in Ozekiyama Park.

●●● Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival ●●●
July 28, 2012   19:30 - 21:30

This display, and the Hamadonya Group which provides the 13,000 fireworks that are used, have been going since the Edo period. In 1741, the recently appointed magistrate of Onomichi, Hirayama Kakuzaemon Naozumi, moved Sumiyoshi Shrine from the Jodoji Temple to Sumiyoshihama on the waterfront protect the port from misfortune. The festival is held in order to wish for the prosperity of business and the safety of sea traffic. There is a colorful parade of boats and the air is filled with thousands of fireworks above the Onomichi Suido Channel.
Taking the ferry over the water to Mukaishima, allows you enjoy the display without having fight the huge crowds (about 350,000 people show up).
Parking for 2500 cars

●●● Hiroshima Port “Dream” Fireworks Festival ●●●
July 28, 2012   20:00 - 21:00

Hiroshima city’s big fireworks extravaganza. Held in the bay in front of the 10,000 Ton Cruise Ship Berth (ichi-man-ton-baasu) next to Ujina Hatoba Koen near Hiroshima Port, this display is big and loud with around 10,000 bangs for your buck (although it’s laid on for free). It’s also an hour long. Many (and we mean many) people head down to Ujina, a lot decked out summer yukata to catch the show. Others watch from further afield. Ujina-bashi Bridge with its big white arch is a popular spot, but we have watched from the riverside as far away as from the riverside in Yoshijima.
If you want to get closer, you can become an individual “sponsor” of the event.
  • ¥15,0000 gets you a zashiki spot for 6 people (400 available)
  • ¥7000 gets you a bench for 3 people (725 available)
  • ¥2000 gets you a spot (for one person) on the grass (4000 available)
The easiest way to secure your spot is to go down to the tourist office in the Rest House at the end of the Motoyasu Bridge on the edge of Peace Park. First come, first served.
