Hiroshima Beer Gardens

Japan’s beer gardens are a lot of fun, and they can certainly help make the long, hot and sticky summer weather more bearable. If there is anything better than drinking an ice cold beer in the open air on a hot summer night, it’s being able to drink as many as you like.

Beer gardens are generally open between June and early September (although some now open as early as Golden Week in early May) and are found on the roofs of large department stores or hotels. Most open at around 5 or 6pm and offer “viking” style food buffets with all-you-can-drink beer and cocktails, for an all-inclusive price of between ¥2500 and ¥3500. You can usually keep drinking until last orders, 15-30 minutes before closing.

August 11th Miyajima Fireworks Festival

Miyajima Fireworks Festival on the 11th of August!!!

Start:August 11, 2012 7:50 pm
Organizer:Miyajima Tourist Office
Phone:0829-44-2011
Address:Hatsukaichi-shi, Hiroshima-ken, Japan

Hiroshima’s most well known fireworks festival. 5000 fireworks explode over the sea silhouetting Itsukushima Shrine’s O-torii.
Worth seeing, but expect huge crowds (300,000 people showed up last year) and you should get there early to avoid a fight for the prime viewing spots.
For those relying on the train, a good tip for the return trip on the way back to Hiroshima is to take the first train heading in the opoosite direction (Iwakuni bound) one stop so you can grab a seat on the next Hiroshima bound train.

Read a bitter sweet account of a fireworks day trip to Miyajima from back in 2006  and get some tips on getting (and keeping) a good spot from Gyoza Fox (lots of nice photos here too).
The display will go ahead in light rain, but in the event of stormy weather will be postponed until August 12 or 13.

Saturday July 15 - Live Irish music at Molly Malone’s

There are a couple of other “Irish” bars in Hiroshima, but Molly Malone’s is still, by far, the closest we have to the real thing. Molly’s has well and truly earned its status as the “local” of many international residents and Japanese customers too.

They have live Irish music from Pat O’Connor and Eoghan O’Sullivan on the second day of the long weekend.
