Fe　18, 2012　Hadaka Naked Man Festival in Okayama

Every year on the 3rd Saturday of February, on one of the coldest nights of the year, thousands of men in fundoshi loincloths parade around Saidaiji Temple in Okayama Prefecture getting purified with freezing cold water. After cramming into the main temple building, the lights go out at 10pm and two lucky shingi sticks are released from the ceiling. The 9000 or so men battle to get hold of one of them and try to stuff it into a wooden box. Whoever manages to do it is guaranteed a year of good fortune.

You can pick up a fundoshi loin cloth for about ¥1000 and join in the “fun” or just go along and watch. The shingi sticks are released at 10pm, but there is a kids version of the event between 3:30 and 5pm and Japanese taiko drumming and other events held at the temple 6-8pm.

This season every year, so many oyster festivals are held in various locations.
Hiroshima's biggest and oldest oyster festival attracts huge crowds looking for raw and cooked oyster dishes at very cheap prices. ( You can try Oyster Miso Soup, Oyster Ramen and Oyster Okonomiyaki etc.) They claim that this is the very best time of year to try the tasty bivalves, why not put it to the test. There will also be Kagura and Taiko drum performances.

"I Could Ski every Day".

"I could honestly ski every day", just as long as my body would let me. We have been three time this year and with lots of day passes in the 'back burner', we are defiantly going to go some more. Geihoku Kokusai 芸北国際 will be the ski field we will try and get to as often as possible.

Now this is not the way to celebrate the coming of the ski season. Winners don't drink like this. They normally sit at a table. But I don't think there is a table big enough for this bottle. We struggled to get it through the door.

We are going to throw a New Year's Eve party on the 31st of December. We are going to have SUKIYAKI this time :):) And then we make some Toshikoshi Soba to celebrate the New Year! Toshikoshi Soba is a Japanese noodle dish which we eat on the New Year's Eve to wish for health and longevity in the year to come. And after the midnight, we will go to a shrine pray as well.

Bouncy Castle “Fuwa Fuwa” Festival

Called the Fuwa-Fuwa Kids Festival, this is a very popular (get there early), family fun event held every year in the main area of the Green Arena concert hall (behind the old Hiroshima baseball stadium). The event is held over 3 days, January 2nd~5th from 10am to 5pm each day. The busiest times are from 11am to 2pm, but it will likely be fairly busy no matter when you go.

There are Japanese Food stalls outside, special events held on the stage inside with popular anime characters who will perform shows and pose for photos with kids throughout each day. The biggest highlight of course is the huge bouncy castles, there are 26 different air-filled rides to enjoy. Prices: (save 100 yen if you buy tickets before hand. Entry ticket of 600 yen or 1500 yen for a family (up to 4 members)

The ski season is also upon us and I will be heading out to as many of Hiroshima ski fields as the winter pregresses. Its a bit early in the season now but rest assured, there will be plenty of good day to be had in the coming months.

This is a mountain I skied many time last season. It is only a 1 hours drive from Hiroshima city and if you get up there on a week day, you can have a lot of terrain to yourself. Just the way we like it. There are sometimes cheap tickets for sale on line, so have a shop around and see whats what!

Now what ever you level, all of the ski fields around Hiroshima have all kinds of runs for all kinds of preferences. I would prefer it if they would just rip away the ropes and let us tear up all the terrain. But here in Japan you have to make safety the number one priority.

This is one of Hiroshima's biggest draws of the winter season and is becoming a one of the city's biggest yearly attractions. Peace Boulevard and parts of the city center will be illuminated with thousands of colored light bulbs to what some think are somewhat tasteless effect and to others are exciting and fun!

This is such a pretty sight site.

It is always crowded with lots of families and couples the last weeks. So if you would like to take good photos, go there in November or early December!

Ebisu Shrine's autumn festival marks the arrival of winter in Hiroshima. Known among locals as Ebessan after the god of commerce, surrounding stores hold sales and buy who Komazarae bamboo rakes adorned with gold coins and a treasure ship. A large keg with mouth wide open is placed in front of the shrine to receive offerings.
The festival usually pulls in around 300,000 people.
Usually on one day final day the main Chuo-dori road is closed to traffic for 3 hours between 7pm and 10pm and addition to all the stalls and activity arund Ebisu shrine there are two stages set up, one at the Ebisu-dori intersection and another at the Shintenchi intersection where kagura dance and taiko drum performances are held.

and they have a big Sake Festival in every fall.

You can taste 900 kinds of Sake from all over Japan

In the evening, the island of Miyajima is very beautiful. Let’s visit the famous Itsukushima Shrine, with an English-speaking guide, visit a maze-like town of Miyajima, then, as we wait for the sunset, visit this intimate gallery café, Genshu, and enjoy a “shinobue” recital.

Meeting times / places / fees:

1. Itsukushima Shrine tour(2:30 pm – 3:45 pm): Meet at 2:30 pm at the Miyajima ferry terminal.
Guide fee: ¥1,000 + Admission to Itsukushima Shrine: ¥300
(Those who join the town walk will be offered a small tea break for free after the shrine tour.)
2. Miyajima town walk (4:30 pm- 5:40 pm): Those who join from the town walk, please meet at 4:30 pm at the stone gate of Itsukushima Shrine. We will visit a 150-year old house and others.
Guide fee: ¥1,000 (Comfortable walking shoes recommended.)
3.Shinobue recital (6:00 pm – around 7:10 pm): If you are not in the shrine tour or the town walk, please meet at 5:45 pm at the Miyajima ferry terminal.

August 6th. A significant date in the history of Japan and the world.
It is on, and around, this date that thousands of tourists from overseas, and foreigners living in Japan, head to Hiroshima to visit the museum and attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony.

This year, however, will be a little different.......

On Monday August 8th, there will be a rare chance to meet a survivor of the A-bomb at Tengu Gallery (Hondori).
Keijiro Matsushima was 16 when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
He will give his testimony of what happened on that fateful day in ENGLISH and there will be a Q&A session afterwards.

So to foster understanding, and in the hope that this atrocity is never repeated, why not come along and listen to Matsushima's story?
Matsushima gives a human face to the A-bombing tragedy.

Keijiro Matsushima - Kataribe (Storyteller)

Born in Hiroshima City in 1929 (82 years old).
He was 16-years-old when the atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
At that time, he was inside a school building that was only two kilometers away from the epicenter.
He taught English in junior high school after the World War II.
After his retirement, he has been active as "Kataribe," a storyteller who recounts his personal atomic bomb experiences to younger generations.

With its nearly 400-year tradition, the Tokasan Festival is one of the three major festivals in Hiroshima. The Chuo-dori area around Enryuji Temple, which is located in Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, is crowded with many people with many stalls lining the street. This festival is also well-known as marking when people in Hiroshima are supposed to begin wearing yukata (casual summer kimono). Many people in elegant yukata with various patterns, such as flowers and vivid geometrical shapes, can be seen at the venue.

Concurrent with the opening of the Tokasan Festival, the Yukata Festival is held in the central area of Hiroshima City. This festival is enlivened with dance performances and stage events. There are also some corners for yukata dressing or fixing a yukata that has come loose (free of charge).

2010 American bio-pic about the 1970s all-girl rock band of the same name. The film was written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, who based the screenplay on the book Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway by the band's original lead vocalist Cherie Currie. Dakota Fanning plays Currie, Kristen Stewart plays rhythm guitarist and vocalist Joan Jett, and Michael Shannon plays record producer Kim Fowley. The film depicts the formation of the band in 1975 and focuses on the relationship between Currie and Jett until Currie's departure from the band.

Musical bio-pics are usually pretty crap, but often quite good fun, and this one seems to got quite a few approving nods from critics.

The Fudoin temple in Hiroshima is one of the very few structures that had survived the ghastly nuclear explosion in 1945. And also be very well known as one of National Treasure
The Fudoin temple is an exquisite piece of work and holds a number of antique structures that speak of the rich cultural heritage of the past. The main hall or Kondo is one of the biggest medieval structures in the country, also it is designated as a national treasure. You can see exterior appearance through a whole year、but not inside. It is not opened to public but only for fixed date which is about only 5 or 6 times throughout a year.

Every May 5th, inside of Kondo is open to public! You will be able to have great Japanese traditional experience there! There will be awesome KOTO(Japanese traditional music instrument) music performance which you will like it for sure!!

The rose season comes to Fukuyama in May. Approximately 500,000 roses are in full bloom, and the Fukuyama Rose Festival is held to commemorate the event. Each year more than 800,000 people visit the Fukuyama Rose Festival, with its amusing attractions such as the parade and stage event centering on Rose Park.
The biggest event of the festival, however, is the “Rose Wedding.” One couple of every year blessed by the festival visitors has a wedding ceremony, surrounded by sweet, beautiful roses.

Also there is another big event which is "BUCHIUMA competition" .
(Buchi mean is very in Hiroshima dialect, Uma mean is yummy)
This time UZUMI theme. Uzumi is Fukuyama local cuisine which ingredients(chicken meat,prawn and so on) covered by rice. Because these foods were considered as luxury a long long time ago. Common people could not have them easily, so when they had opportunity to have them、they hide and ate.

Mar.27 (Sun) Tohoku Earthquake Charity Ride on Etajima, Hiroshima

The Hiroshima ride takes place on the nearby island of Etajima this Sunday.

Riders will meet at Hiroshima (Ujina) Port at 08:30 and take a ferry at about 09:00 over to Kirikushi. From there the group will do a 30km (approx 2hr) ride to Mitaka Port from where ferries return to Ujina. Depending on the weather the group might hand out on Etajima for a while and have lunch etc.

A donation of ¥1000 is requested from participants. This will be matched by Rapha as part of the worldwide rides organized for Tohoku and then donated to the Red Cross.

Please bring a bike, a helmet, ¥2000 for the ferry (for yourself and your bike).

My friend Tasuku Tsuji is showing his debut performance in this film, so I would like to introduce this film "COLD SLEEP". He joined this drama as a drummer and a sub dancer.

It's mixed performance with a violin and ballet showing their love story in the era of post-apocalyptic world.The woman was in the cold sleep. And the tough guy appeared in front of her. She awake from cold sleep and fell in love with him. However strong thunder killed him. She was so depressed and fell sleep into cold sleep again...

My writing skill in English is not good so I cannot explain well, but this drama was cinemized drama which was played on New National Theatre, Tokyo last fall.

The Hadaka Matsuri takes place on the 3rd Saturday of February every year.

You can pick up a fundoshi for about ¥1000 and join in the "fun" or just go along and watch. The shingi sticks are released at midnight, but there are other events held at the temple from 6pm.

Eating Ehou-maki on the day is one of the special traditional events which has become popular recently.

In Western Japan, people make giant Sushi rolls. It's believed if you eat an entire Sushi Roll facing towards the lucky direction of the year with NO SPEAKING, then you will get good fortune!

We will make Eho-Maki (Fortune Sushi Roll) and eat it facing the south-southeast with everybody together.

All inclusive tour that takes you from the city center into the (hopefully) snowbound northern mountains of Hiroshima Prefecture in just 90min. On arrival, the day starts with a guided snowshoe trek to the designated The natural monument "Tengu-shide" grove of trees. These twisted hornbeams look particularly distinctive when their branches are loaded with snow.

After the trek, you can warm yourself up with a soak in an onsen hot spring and a simple, but hearty lunch of tofu-nabe and rice.

As the bus is going to take you back to the city, you don't have to worry about indulging in the different varieties of high quality daiginjo sake produced at the Oigame brewery. Then after a 30 minute pit stop, you can sleep off the sake on the way home.

The ritual firing of the first arrow of the year at Omote Shrine on Miyajima.

Taking place at Omote Shrine on Miyajima, a shrine which actually predates the mosre famous Itsukushima Shrine, this annual ritual is the remanents of a grander ceremony which is said to have involved a hundred archers firing 200 arrows. These days, there is just one archer who after firing arrows towards heaven, the earth, left and right fires four more arrows at a target, 20 paces away, with the character oni, demon, painted on the back. While similar ceremonies in other parts of Japan are held to wish for bountiful harvests and for weather divination, according to the "Momote-sai website" this ritual is said to symbolize a determination to live the year peacefully.

After the ceremony, hohan is served. This is a dish of rice topped with various foods and soup, once eaten on the battlefield.

Tondo Festivals

If you're driving or biking along the rivers that run through town or in the countryside around the middle of January you may well see groups of people gathered around large bonfires, eating and drinking. This is the tondo matsuri, which is held on or around koshogatsu - literally means "small new year", and is celebrated at lunar New Year.

Local communities gather at the site of their bonfire and burn the New Year decorations, roast mochi and warm sake over the flames, and fan the smoke from the burnt decorations for good luck.

The large Gokoku Shrine, located in the city next to the castle will hold its tondo matsuri on Jan 15th from 10am. You can get an idea of the event from the video below.

There is also a tondo on the banks of the river next to Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni on January, 16 from 5pm to 7pm.

Follow the smoke plumes to the festivals at other shrines, schools and parks.

Over the next two weeks Yokogawa Cinema is screening nine American documentaries that, due to the subject matter they cover, received very limited runs in the US and have been rarely screened here in Japan. The films Jesus Camp, Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?, Bigger, Stronger, Faster, Flow: For The Love of Water, Kinjongilia, Kassim The Dream, Crude: The True Cost of Oil, Jake on Corwood and The Business of Being Born will be screened between January 8 and January 21. Impressive festival held at Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine on New Year's Eve to pray for the prevention of fire while seeing the old year out.

For a night to remember (or at least never forget), bundle up and fill those flasks full of warming cheer, and hang around as the crowds build in the run up to midnight as the New Year gets rung in by the temple bells. If you haven't had enough by then, make the early morning trek up to the top of Mt. Misen to catch the first sunrise of the New Year.

Irish flute player Hanz Araki returns to Molly Malone's Hiroshima with his mix of traditional and contemporary Celtic music. This time he is accompanied by Kathryn Claire on fiddle.

Irish flute player Hanz Araki is the quintessential world music musician. He has performed around the world with the Juno Award-winning Paperboys, The Bridies, Casey Neill and an all-star tribute to The Pogues called "K.M.R.I.A." He has played with the Seattle Symphony, the University of Washington Wind Ensemble and is featured on more than a dozen recordings and soundtracks, from feature films and documentaries to popular video games.

While his love is Irish music, his deep roots are in the shakuhachi, the traditional bamboo "Zen flute" of Japan. Hanz (short for Hanzaburo) is the world’s only sixth generation shakuhachi player, following in the footsteps of his father, Kinko Ryu Grand Master Kodo Araki V. With no prior musical training, Hanz took up the shakuhachi at age 17. Under his father’s tutelage, four months later he made his concert debut in Shimoneski, Japan. He went on to teach shakuhachi at Keio University for two years before moving back to his hometown of Seattle in 1991.

There, his American mother’s Gaelic roots came into play, and he began teaching himself Irish and Scottish tunes on the flute and whistle, inspired by the many excellent pipers and fiddlers in Seattle. His ability on the flute and his uncanny command of traditional songs with his voice quickly made him a fixture of the Irish music scene in America.

In 2004, Hanz released a solo album of traditional Scottish and Irish music with a fresh new slant, "Six of One, Five of the Other." It has been favorably received by fans and Irish music aficionados and earned him liveireland.com's Best Newcomer of the Year and KLCC's "Best Music of 2004" list. His newest release, "Little Fires" is a bold mix of traditional Celtic and modern music.

With the following day a National Holiday, this has the making of a quite a party.

Free Kagura At The Bank

The Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce is putting on free kagura performances at the Former Bank of Japan building (Kyu Nichigin) on weekend and holiday nights throughout April.

On each of the nights there will two 45 minute performances starting at 19:00 and finishing at 20:40.

They will close the doors if it gets full so you should probably try and get there a bit ahead of time.

Ebisu Shrine's autumn festival marks the arrival of winter in Hiroshima. Known among locals as Ebessan after the god of commerce, surrounding stores hold sales and buy who Komazarae bamboo rakes adorned with gold coins and a treasure ship. A large keg with mouth wide open is placed in front of the shrine to receive offerings.
The festival usually pulls in around 300,000 people.
Usually on one day final day the main Chuo-dori road is closed to traffic for 3 hours between 7pm and 10pm and addition to all the stalls and activity arund Ebisu shrine there are two stages set up, one at the Ebisu-dori intersection and another at the Shintenchi intersection where kagura dance and taiko drum performances are held.

This ceremony is held semiyearly in April and November.
You make a wish as you walk on the fire place as pictured above.

Thisis one of Hiroshima's biggest draws of the winter season and is becoming a one of the city's biggest yearly attractions.

Peace Boulevard and parts of the city center will be illuminated with thousands of colored light bulbs to what some think are somewhat tasteless effect and to others are exciting and fun.

This year there are 23 different theme areas and they boast that Dreamination beats the rest of Japan's illuminations in three respects: 2km of illuminations along Peace Boulevard, 120,000 bulbs and a 30m tall decorated tree.

It would be nice to see solar panels along the boulevard charging up power during the day to run the illuminations at night to make it a less wasteful event.

Join the crowd of people and take part in the "walking over fire ceremony" at Daiganiji Temple (Nov 5) and Daishoin Temple (Nov 15)on the island of Miyajima.

Walk across hot coals "to pray for protection from illness and disaster."
You can join the other participants who go through physical pain in hopes of future comfort.

Some claim that if you have
"a pure heart" or good reasons to will yourself across the coals....
it doesn't hurt at all.

According to the official Miyajima Homepage:
In 1888, Daishoin temple was totally destroyed by fire except for the main Daishido Hall.
The current Daishoin is a reconstruction of the former building. There are many ceremonies that take place year-round here as Daishoin is a very important temple according to the Buddhist faith.

It would be a good Japanese travel experience!

To Miyajima Island is 40-minute tram ride and 10 minutes by ferry boat from J-Hoppers Hiroshima!

November 14th(SAT) Japan Music Week in Hiroshima

The second annual Japan Music Week is running in Tokyo from November 9-14. The event is a fledgling music conference that aims to introduce Japanese acts to overseas markets and vice versa. Already boasting a rosta of several hundred events in venues all over Tokyo Japan Music Week looks set to grow in leaps and bounds.

GetHiroshimaa, in conjunction with Southern Cross, is hosting our own Hiroshima shindig on the final day of the event.

There is no cover charge, so if you'd like to check out some local musicians on a Sunday, come down to Southern Cross.

Over 300 booths from 23 towns and cities in the prefecture will be hawking everything from beef to oysters around Hiroshima Castle, in the Shareo shopping bunker and around Pacela.

Over in Chuo Park will be the international festival which, now in its 26th year, has been absorbed by this monster event.

Onomichi invites visitors to take another look at the town and the many temples that surround it, by the light of thousands of candles.

Sake festival in Saijo is coming up! Saijo is one of the big three Sake breweries in Japan as well as Nada(Hyogo) and Fushimi(Kyoto).

You can taste like 900 kinds of Sake from all over Japan, if you buy one day ticket for admission. It means...yeah...limitless sake tasting...

Tea ceremony (1,000 yen. It lasts about 1h depending on the number of people)
It starts every hour from 9:00am till 17:00 pm (No tea ceremony between 12:00 and 13:00).
First, you’ll learn the basics of a traditional tea ceremony and then you’ll participate in one. Tea and Japanese sweets are served during the ceremony. Green tea will be served after the ceremony to cool down!! *Those who attend the ceremony once can take calligraphy class for 1,000 yen (300 yen off the original price). Reservations are NOT required. You can stop by anytime!!

Calligraphy class (1,300 yen. 1hour)
It starts from 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 13:00 pm, 14:30 pm, and 16:00 pm (1 hour/class).
You don’t need to bring anything and the art that you make in class is yours to keep!! Green tea will also be served after the class to quench your thirst!! *If you want to take another class, please let us know. We will arrange the next step for you and you’ll get a 200 yen discount! Those who take this class once can take a tea ceremony for 700 yen (300 yen off the original price). Reservations are not required, but it’s better to book in advance so you won’t be disappointed to know it’s fully booked.

The lunch class starts from 10:00 am (about 1 hour 30 minutes). The dinner class starts from 15:00 pm (about 3 hours). Let’s enjoy making Japanese food and of course eating it!!
